“During my formative years, when a student at Parsons in New York, Mondrian’s trees series at the MOMA had a big impact on me, I was fascinated by his transition from reality to abstraction.

Reality. Stepping away from it.

Later the minimalist artists of the 60’s such as Carl André, Donald Judd, Sol Lewitt became a reference. They had a theoretical approach that I admire, they redefine what sculpture was, not an object alone but an object in space.

Photography catches images to freeze them in time. Sculpture assembles materials to create volumes in space.
It is the combination of these two disciplines that is the basis of my work and research.”

Gaston Bertin, was born in France, when he is 10 his family moves to Barcelona, Spain. At the age of 16 he moves abroad to pursue his education in a Massachusetts Prep School.
He receives his Bachelor of Fine Art in Photography from the Parsons School of Design in New York, later he undertakes a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design as well as Studies in Industrial Design at the Istituto Europeo di Design In Milan, Italy.
In 1993, at the age of 27, he returns to Europe and settles in Madrid, in 2000 he moves to Barcelona. In 2019 he moves near the Loire Valley in the French country side where he now lives and works.
